Monterey Aldermen authorized the bid letting for a stormwater drainage project Tuesday.
Engineer Jerry Warren said he plans to bid out the project once he hears back from TDEC about permits.
“The plans are basically finalized and we’ve talked to TDEC on permitting,” Warren said. “I’m waiting for information back from TDEC to see if they want to put any additional conditions or requirements that we don’t know about.”
The project will install a new drainage channel going behind the Bowman property on East Commercial Avenue and down to the railroad tracks. Warren estimates the project will cost between $150,000 and $175,000.
The town will also need to acquire three or four permanent easements for the drainage conveyance. Vice Mayor Starlett Wessels said she would oppose the project if property owners do not gift the easements.
“I would be strongly opposed to reimbursing them for an easement when it’s benefiting their land,” Wessels said. “They are the reason we are doing the project because they have loudly voiced their concerns and displeasure with the water problems.”
Warren said he hopes to hear back from TDEC by the middle of July. The board of aldermen will likely review bids later this summer.
