Adult and Teen Challenge Starts Cookeville Addiction Support Group

The Adult and Teen Challenge of the Upper Cumberland is adding a new Cookeville support group to its Hope for Life program.

Executive Director Tim McLauchlin said the addiction recovery and concerned persons group is meant to educate functioning addicts to overcome life controlling habits.

“That can be drugs, that can be alcohol, that can be pornography, that can be betting issues,” McLauchlin said. “Some people struggle with food addiction. We want to help anybody that says I have a life controlling issue. I can’t function without whatever this is.”

McLauchlin said the session will cover four aspects of recovery. McLauchlin said the first class will go over what is called, “Insight.”

“We dig into what is a life controlling issue and how do you know if you have one, and we work through that and that is about eight to nine weeks,” McLauchlin said. “Then, the next one we go into is called, ‘Stepping into Freedom.’ What we do then is you recognized your life controlling issue, how do you walk out?”

McLauchlin said participants will also learn what to do when you stumble and overcoming those emotions. McLauchlin said all a person has to do is show up to participate.

“We want them to know that there is freedom, and they need to come on out,” McLauchlin said. “This is not an embarrassing thing. Usually the meetings are an hour to an hour and a half and meet once a week. I can’t tell you how many hundreds and hundreds of people that has went through the Hope for Life over the past 12 years that are living successful lives.”

McLauchlin said the group meets every Wednesday at 6:30 at Cookeville’s New Beginning Assembly of God on Broad Street.
