Many fans at Thursday night’s Cookeville-Upperman game did not follow posted COVID guidelines, causing concern among school administrators.
“We hope in future games, fans will take more personal responsibility for following the TSSAA guidelines so that we can continue to allow them to attend the football games this season,” administrators said in a Friday afternoon press release.
Both Cookeville and Upperman administrators shared COVID guidelines with students. Seating was taped off to encourage social distancing. PA announcements were made throughout the game. However, students overwhelmingly ignored the protocols. They were seated close together and did not wear masks.
One observer said adults were equally resistant to the guidelines.
“Unfortunately, many fans did not feel it necessary to be personally responsible for helping provide themselves and others a safer environment,” administrators said.
