A man had to be airlifted to Vanderbilt Medical Center after an accidental shooting in Cookeville Tuesday.
Authorities said the shooting happened at a residence on Apple Valley Court after three men finished a round of target practice.
According to a press release from the Cookeville Police Department, one of the men thought he had unloaded a .22 caliber rifle when it discharged and struck one of the men in the back.
Officials said the victim’s condition began to deteriorate while being transported by private vehicle to Cookeville Regional Medical Center. The men stopped at the Shell station on West Jackson Street and called the Putnam County Ambulance Service, according to the release.
An air ambulance eventually arrived on scene and transported the victim to Vanderbilt Medical, where he’s expected to make a full recovery.
Cookeville Police want to reiterate the importance of treating all firearms as if they are loaded and to remember that muzzle control should always be maintained when handling a firearm.
The shooting is believed to be accidental and no charges are expected to be filed.
