Smith County’s State Route 25 will not be reopening October 31st.
Earlier this week TDOT announced plans to reopen the road on the 31st, but today TDOT said the road would remain closed until further notice.
Officials said an inspection by TDOT on Thursday determined a high potential for rockslides to occur, despite crews removing 124,000 cubic yards of rock material over the last two months. The road closed in June after deterioration on a rock bluff led to dangerous debris falling onto the roadway.
The $4.1 million rockfall mitigation project began earlier this spring. The project follows a 2013 rockslide, which required a roadway closure for 20 days.
