Cookeville Police Warn Of Spoofing Scam

According to Cookeville Police, scammers are spoofing the department’s phone number and using the name of an actual employee of the department.

Detective Bobby Anderson said the latest scammer used the name of a current employee and told the victim he owed $2,000 to the department or he would be arrested.

“Not just this scam, but any scam, when somebody calls and demands money right a way at a reduced amount, it’s a red flag,” Anderson said. “We want people to remember that we will never demand money from anyone. All money exchanges are done through clerks offices or here at the police department. Don’t fall victim to it and call us.”

Anderson said the scammer was able to spoof the police department number by using an online application.

If you believe you have been a victim of this scam contact the Police Department.
