The Cookeville City Council gave approval last night to hire Seattle Washington’s Grindline Skateparks as the subcontractor for Cookeville’s first skate park.
Councilman Charles Womack said the new skate park is one of the reasons that makes Cookevile such a great place to live.
“We’ve got soccer complexes, softball, baseball complexes and now a skate park complex,” Womack said. “It will bring people in and they will spend money.”
Grindline scored higher than any other subcontractor who submitted proposals for the project.
“If you look at the scoring, it wasn’t even close,” Cookeville Mayor Ricky Shelton said. “It’s exciting to have a world-class company to build us a world-class park that everyone has waited so long for.”
Last year the city received a $400,000 state grant to help build the skate park. Last month, the city voted to pay $50,000 to HFR Design and another $30,000 to a skate park design firm.
The skate park will be build at the old Park View Pool, which closed down some 10 years ago. Cookeville Leisure Services Director Rick Woods said the park could be open by the summer of 2018.
