Monterey officials have their sights on cleaning up a few dilapidated buildings around town.
Monterey Mayor Bill Wiggins said the town attorney has filed two lawsuits in Chancery Court seeking to clean up the properties on Commercial Avenue and Emby Street.
“Monterey has adopted the 2015 building codes, which makes it the law in Monterey,” Wiggins said. “This is to protect other property owners too. We’re trying achieve the same goal and observe what laws are on the books.”
Wiggins said a building on Commercial Avenue is on the verge of collapsing and a home on Emby Street is nearly destroyed and overgrown with vegetation.
Wiggins said the city chose to go to court after the owners of the properties failed to respond to requests to clean up the areas.
