The rail trail extension project is underway in Monterey.
Groundbreaking on the 1,000 foot trail extension began Tuesday. Mayor Bill Wiggins said once completed the trail will run from behind the Monterey Community Center to Crossville Street near Burkes Middle School.
“There are virtually no sidewalks out of Burks Middle School,” Wiggins said. “During the academic year lots of kids walk on the roads. So at least this will provide safe passage for those kids if we can get the trail connected.”
The current trail begins at the farmers market downtown and runs eastward four blocks to the community center. The trail will be 1 mile long once the extension project is completed.
The project was funded with a $90,000 grant from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and a $22,000 local match from the town of Monterey.
