DeKalb County Coalition Animal Shelter will get a boost from a few fundraisers organized by volunteers.
One of those volunteers is Debbie Rowe. Rowe started a “Friends of DeKalb County Animals” Facebook group. So far, the group has events planned in August, September and October.
Saturday’s canoe and kayak poker run will start the fundraisers off. The seven-mile float begins at the Caney Fork River access in Gordonsville.
Participants draw a card at each stop and the three best hands get prizes.
“I just started volunteering. My mother used to volunteer with the Humane Society we had in town many years ago. I remember cleaning the kennels with her and it just sort of all came back and she passed away 11 years ago and I thought it would make her proud if I volunteered and tried to help out,” Rowe said.
Rowe said all of the money raised through the events goes to the DeKalb County Coalition Animal Shelter.
