Vehicle registration fees statewide will go up July 1.
Putnam County Clerk Wayne Nabors said it’s part of the gas tax bill.
“Beginning July 1, license fees as we know them are going to increase by $5, this is on the IMPROVE Act, this is Gov. Haslam’s, in the bill to increase the gas tax all across Tennessee and also the registrations,” Nabors said.
Nabors said the cost of all license plates will go up. Personal vehicle plates will go up $5, while commercial plates and those for tractor trailers will go up $20. Electric car owners will pay a $100 fee. Nabors said he didn’t believe Putnam County had any electric vehicle owners.
The IMPROVE Act was passed on split votes in the state legislature earlier this spring.
Nabors said if anyone complains, the increase wasn’t his decision.
“It’s not my bill, it’s Gov. Haslam’s, Wayne had nothing to do with that, so if anybody’s going to complain I’m going to give them Gov Haslam’s phone number say you call him, don’t complain to me, I’m just, don’t shoot the messenger,” Nabors joked.
In addition to raising fees, the tax on each gallon of gasoline will go up four cents July 1.
