Cookeville Police Major Carl Sells said a woman’s quick thinking helped her get away after a man allegedly grabbed her and assaulted her on the Rail Trail last week.
Sells shared some personal safety tips with News Talk 94.1.
Sells recommended being aware of your surroundings, whether on the interstate, in town or in the woods. He suggested keeping track of landmarks to keep yourself oriented.
Being aware of people around you is also key, Sells said. He recommended being aware of other people and how close they are to you.
Finally, keeping a cool head in an emergency is important. Sells suggested thinking about possible scenarios and planning how to escape. That’s why police train for every possibility, Sells said, so they’re prepared in the event of an incident.
Sells said Cookeville is a safe place, without much stranger-on-stranger violence.
