Monterey Considering Renaming Multi-Use Field

Monterey Aldermen are considering renaming the new Black Bottom Multi-Use Field after the late Monterey Mayor.

Monterey Mayor Alex Garcia said the proposed name, Mayor Nathan Walker Memorial Field. Garcia said the field has never been officially named and that the field should be dedicated to Walker.

“He passed away suddenly at the beginning of his term,” Garcia said. “And that field was pretty much his brain child. He is the one who wanted to see a soccer field here in Monterey. He is the one that kind of secured the funds for it.”

Garcia said Walker was a great person and a big advocate for the Monterey community. Garcia said the name is not final and that the board of aldermen still has work to do in finalizing the field’s new name.

“I tasked all the board members to come up with a name,” Garcia said. “Then we would discuss it and finalize it at the April meeting.”

Garcia said that once the name is finalized, the town would purchase a sign to place at the field. Garcia said the town plans to celebrate the improvements that have been made to the field.

“We’ll probably have a ribbon cutting there,” Garcia said. “The concession stand is finished. They should have their final on electrical today, and the parking lot has been striped, so basically, it’s just waiting for the sign, and once the sign gets put up, we can have a ribbon cutting ceremony.”
