Jackson Seeking Bids For Marquee Sign

Jackson County School Board voted to seek bids for a digital marquee sign at Dodson Branch School during its Thursday Board Meeting.

Director of Schools Jason Hardy said Dodson Branch currently has a marquee sign but it is not digital. Hardy said the school system has grant funding set aside for Dodson Branch.

“They are gonna combine this with their computer classes and let kids be able to program messages and do things like that,” Hardy said. “I don’t know how much exactly this is gonna be but I figured we need to get permission to at least seek the bids.”

K-8 Elementary Supervisor Caroline Woodason said a digital marquee sign would improve the connection between the school and the community.

“Dodson Branch is out in sort of its own community and they really love having the community as part of the school system and so they want to have a marquee where the community and family members can see what is going on in the school, can know about events, can know about any news and updates at the school level. So they really think it would be a good community partnership so they are hoping to get more involvement in the community.”

Woodason said the sign would be great for people who drive by the school. Woodason said the more parents that know what is going on the more support the school will likely receive.

“They would be excited to have more information and news on the school and how they can support the school,” Woodason said.

Hardy said digital marquee signs have a wide range of prices and that he would have to work out the details of exactly what the school wants.

In other business, Maintenance Supervisor Josh Morgan said that recent weather has delayed several projects. Morgan said warmer weather is projected for next week and that projects could begin to see more progress.

The board approved a revision to a TSBA policy regarding Promotion and Retention. Hardy said the state law says that if you want to hold your kid back for Kindergarten through second grade you have to submit a written request within 30 days of the end of the school year. Hardy said the revision just added the language to the policy.

The board approved the 2025-2026 school calendar.
