Monterey Forming Sports And Events Committee

Monterey will move forward with forming a sports and events committee.

Mayor Alex Garcia said the committee would be made up of five people including Alderman Cecilia Paulsen. Garcia said he wants to form the committee to help the new soccer field at Black Bottom Sports Fields have a smooth launch.

“Now that we have a multi-use field that will be available in March you can’t really play softball and soccer at the same time,” Garcia said. “So we have to have some sort of a body that can handle the scheduling for that field. They are also going to handle all of the events that the town has and are gonna come through that body.”

Garcia said he is currently looking for other members to fill the four remaining spots on the committee. Garcia said he hopes the committee can be formed and have an initial meeting by the end of the month.

“That meeting is going to talk about vision, talk about processes on how we are gonna do it all, and how its going to go forward,” Garcia said. “We should be set after this first meeting.”

Garcia said the committee will maintain a live events calendar on the new Monterey website. Garcia said he believes for the first few months he expects the soccer field to be quite popular.

“I’m of the frame of mind that we are gonna have something scheduled everyday for awhile,” Garcia said.

Garcia said the committee will likely meet once a month but could meet more than once depending on how many events are needed to be scheduled.
