Crossville City Council will consider a project that would replace Main Street traffic signals at the intersections of 4th Street and 1st Street.
City Manager Valerie Hale said the overall project is estimated to cost $1.1 million and would take two years to complete. Crossville Director of Engineering Tim Begley said the project unfortunately would affect the new downtown sidewalk that was recently constructed.
“Yes, we will tear up some new sidewalk there is no way around it,” Begley said. “If we do the bump-outs we are tearing up some curb and gutter and having a new curb and gutter coming on out in the street.”
Begley said the work for replacing the signal intersection on 1st Street would be different as it would need curb bump-outs on all four corners to hold the poles. However, Begley said he is not sure if the bump-outs would work as portions of the original project have been pulled.
“That project also had some underground drainage,” Begley said. “I’m not sure at this point if the bump-outs would work without the underground drainage. That’s another issue cause all of that was pulled out of the original project.”
Begley said the city needs to do the project now as the city would not have to do as much work compared to if the city waited. The council will try to have an engineering contract before the upcoming council meeting.
