Embrace Movement And Local Resources For Better Health

So many people trying to make a change in fitness believe it takes too much of a commitment or takes up too much of their time.

Cookeville Leisure Services Special Programs Coordinator Jen Webb said movement is at the top of the list for positive mental and physical health. Webb said staying active does not always mean intense weight training or pushing to the max.

“One hundred percent the goal is staying active,” Webb said. “It’s just our bodies are naturally going to age and decline as you know, were getting older. So by moving, just consistent movement, it can be as simple as just walking, you always want to keep moving.”

Webb said that setting too strict of a regimen can lead to burnout. She said that is one of the main reasons people abandon their routines. Webb said incorporating a variety of activities is important to keep things engaging.

Webb says there are many ways to embrace movement, including dancing, sports, or even a leisurely walk.

“Sometimes people think that they need to run or do a specific thing to get the results they want, when in actuality it is movement in general,” Webb said. “Somebody could dance and still get the cardio that they could from another activity.”

Webb said that habit stacking can help create a more positive mindset. Webb said that by starting small with new habits and then combining them, a person can make gradual changes. Webb also said that participating in group activities, rather than exercising alone, can be an effective way to build these new habits.

“I’m of the thought that people were created for community,” Webb said. “We all do better when we have other people who smile when you arrive, they’re expecting you, they help you set goals, they’re great accountability partners and there’s something about when you’re doing a really difficult class and everyone suffers together.”

Webb said one of the benefits of using your local Leisure Services or Parks and Recreation Office are the multiple classes and opportunities to get moving.
