The Cumberland County Commission appointed Karen Shanks to serve as a representative for the county’s third district.
County Mayor Allen Foster said Shanks was one of four citizens seeking the position. Foster said Shanks was chosen with eleven votes compared to the next candidate’s seven.
Foster said each candidate was given ten minutes to speak to the commission before voting took place. Foster said Shanks was chosen after two rounds of voting, which allowed the final decision to be be between her and runner-up Craig Clark.
Foster said all the candidates spoke well and showed courage by stepping up for the position. Foster also thanked Rebecca Stone for her time as a commissioner, citing her instrumental work with multiple boards and committees in the county.
