Tech After Dark Thursday Gives Families View

Tennessee Tech hosts Tech After Dark Thursday to give high school students a glimpse of what campus life is like after hours.

Tennessee Tech Admissions Assistant Director Ted McWilliams said the university typically invites students from Upper Cumberland High Schools to attend the event. McWilliams said many people have school, work, and other activities and cannot tour the campus during the day.

“A lot of people don’t think about the college,” McWilliams said. “We still have an active environment, student activities, intermural sports, a fitness center, and things like that. Many times the meeting of student groups go on after classes and stuff when it is nighttime and such and just kind of see it from a different perspective as well.”

McWilliams said part of the event is a special tour that takes students to places that are not normally shown on V.I.P. tours such as the Millard Oakley STEM Center. McWilliams said this is a great time for parents to bring their children to campus as the parents can ask questions about the university.

“It works with their schedule,” McWilliams said. “That’s one of the bigger things and stuff is being after dark. We wanted to try and see if we could get folks here for those who couldn’t manage during the day to have an event at night. Kind of seeing it in a different limelight and it works with their schedule.”

McWilliams said the event is mainly for Upper Cumberland Students as it is a late event during the week. McWilliams said those who are outside of the Upper Cumberland are welcome if they can make it.

“With a nighttime event, I’m sure we could put it out to Nashville, East Tennessee, Chattanooga, and such,” McWilliams said. “But by the time somebody gets here at 7pm and is here for two hours then they got an hour and a half drive it is going to be late so we do consider safety in there as well.”

Tech after Dark will begin Thursday at 7pm. The event will begin at Bell Hall Auditorium. The event comes on the heels of Fall 2025 registration being open.
