Cookeville Honored With Wastewater Award

Cookeville’s Wastewater Treatment Plant has been awarded the Operational Excellence Award from the Kentucky Tennessee Water Professionals Conference.

The award is given to plants with no more than one violation of pollution rules during the annual reporting period. Cookeville Water and Sewer Department Director Barry Turner said the Cookeville Wastewater Treatment plant had zero violations. Turner said the award is one of the most prestigious awards the conference has.

“Everyone in the department truly contributed to this award,” Turner said. “Sort of the backbone of that though is the water distribution superintendent and the servicers and backhoe operators that are under him.”

Turner said of the 250 permit holders only eleven plants received the award. Turner said Cookeville is quite familiar with the award as the city has now received it 12 years in a row.

Turner said the award committee spent a day looking at the plant’s parts, equipment storage, water tanks, planning, GIS mapping, construction inspection, safety, record keeping, customer service, and emergency preparedness.
