Cookeville To Consider Pickleball Court Bids

Cookeville City Council will consider a bid to construct new pickleball courts at Cane Creek Park during its Thursday meeting.

Leisure Services Director Rick Woods said they received three highly competitive bids for the project with the lowest at some $806,000. Woods said the city is ready to start construction but they are still working with the contractor to determine when the project can begin.

“You can’t always just pour concrete or do asphalt paving in cold weather,” Woods said. “So we want to be sensitive to that and look at that with a contractor and see what the best start date might be.”

Woods said the project will take about ninety days to complete once it gets underway. Woods said they were able to save a significant amount of money by using the public works department to handle grading and stormwater treatment.

“Electric department has been a great help with us on this project, too, to help us with the design of lighting and the commitment to install that lighting,” Woods said.

Woods said the company he is recommending to handle the new courts is currently building pickleball courts in Murfreesboro.

“We talked to Murfreesboro, they said they’re really happy with them and they’re doing good work,” Woods said. “And so I feel pretty good about that.”

Woods said there will be certain items for the courts that may take longer to set up such as benches because they have to be ordered and brought in.

“The location of the pickleball courts is in an area that is readily available to the contractors and we can do construction there and work there without disrupting other areas of the park,” Woods said.
