The Lake Tansi Exchange Club needs your help for its 3rd annual Field of Honor Flag event in Crossville next month.
The Field of Honor event will consist of 700 American flags being placed at Garrison Park in honor of military veterans. Lake Tansi Exchange Club Public Relations Chair Jean Smith said 99-year-old World War II Veteran George DeLancey will cut the ribbon for this year’s event.
“There’s no doubt about it we have to do this field for our Cumberland County Veterans,” Smith said. “Cumberland County has one of the largest percentage of veterans in the state of Tennessee. When we saw that field I kid you not I got goosebumps.”
Smith said the flags will fly at the park from November 10th through November 16th. Smith said residents visit the field of honor and leave very emotional thinking about the sacrifices made for our freedom.
“It is so emotional and a lot of them will put their hand on their heart,” Smith said. “It brings back all the memories of the friends and the buddies and the families that so many of us have lost because of wartime.”
Flags can be purchased and dedicated for $35. Smith said the funds will go towards the expenditures and the surplus funds will be donated to the Cumberland County Veterans Assistance Council.
“They help veterans who maybe are having a hard time,” Smith said. “They may be struggling right now and finding it hard to make ends meet. CCVAC will help them out with their utility bill and they will even buy groceries for them if need be.”
