Dekalb County Head Coach Steve Trapp said his focus is on winning Friday night after two straight losses.
The Tigers stand 5-2 on the season after losing to Stone Memorial and Macon County. Trapp said they will learn and pull lessons from their losses, but will not dwell on them.
“We can’t allow something that’s already happened that we can’t change to impact us moving forward,” Trapp said. “So, that’s the type of things we talk about, but we definitely want to have a different vibe after the football game this week than we’ve had the last couple of weeks.”
Trapp said working with 14-19 year olds can come with emotional ebbs and flows, but has been encouraged by his players reaction to this mid-season adversity. Ahead of their week 8 match-up with the Cumberland County Jets, Trapp is assigning football homework to his players.
“They just got to buy into taking everything that we’re giving them,” Trapp said. “Do their part when they get home and verify it with some more film review, just so that when they get on the field and they see it, they’re understanding it. We’re going to continue to practice and our mindset is good.”
With a district record of 1-2, a loss on Friday would put the Tigers playoff hopes in serious jeopardy. Trapp said the Jets’ 2-4 record does not tell the whole story and his defense will need to be prepared for an offense that has shined at times this year.
“Offensively they’re multiple and I mean that in that they’ll do a couple different things,” Trapp said. “They’ll spread you out, they have the ability to throw in the quick passing game but then also have that perimeter run game that we have not been good against the last couple of weeks.”
Trapp noted that every game he has seen from Cumberland County has shown their offense is capable of moving the ball against quality opponents. He said although they take film review seriously, it will all boil down to what his team does come Friday night.
“It’s about our process of work, not matter who the opponent is,” Trapp said. “And just making sure that we’re doing it the way it’s supposed to be done. So, that we can have an opportunity to have success, so they’ve got our full attention.”
Dekalb County will travel to Crossville to take on the Cumberland County Jets this Friday, kickoff at 7pm.
