White County Commissioners will consider upgrading solid waste convenience centers throughout the county.
County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson asked the county’s Solid Waste Committee to consider changes to deal with increased traffic and more trash.
“We got to start processing because it’s about that time to look at upgrading all these convenience centers,” Robinson said. “Same model we’ve been having for 20 years. Trash has doubled in that time, probably more than doubled in that time and we are still using the same equipment.”
Robinson updating the centers will shorten the time it takes to drop off trash at the centers for citizens. Robinson said he is hoping that the revenue coming in from the landfill and solid waste fees will fund the project of upgrading the convenience centers.
Conversations continue among White County Commissioners about moving the District Six Solid Waste Convenience Center out of the landfill.
The county sold the landfill to Waste Management and is now looking to move the convenience center to its original location which is adjacent to the landfill. County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said the county is looking to move the convenience center to get the general public out of the way of transport trucks using the landfill.
“This is a safety issue as we start having trucks coming in and out,” Robinson said. “We don’t need just everybody going in and out unsupervised. Safety is a top priority for us and for Waste Management and we are just trying to do what we can to make it safer for everybody to dispose of the trash.”
Robinson said he is continuing to have conversations with Waste Management about moving the convenience center. Robinson said he hopes to move the convenience center as soon as possible.
“The biggest aggravation is for them trying to do their operation,” Robinson said. “So they want to get it out as quick as possible, so I expect to hear back pretty soon from them.”
