New York City Premiers Play From Cookeville Play Writer

Cookeville Playwright and Producer Laura Holloway saw her new play “The Kitchen” premiere in New York City this week.

Holloway said the play premiered “off-off Broadway” which is in theatres that sit roughly around 100 people. Holloway said that her play being premiered in New York City was a great experience.

“We’ve got a cast of nine people and a crew of two and there are some extra workers who finished up at the end to make things happen,” Holloway said. “Everybody just had a really great time. It was a fun show to do and just a really fun trip for everybody.”

Holloway said she got the opportunity to have her play premiered after she wrote the play and reached out to multiple theatres and lucky enough one of them was interested in housing the play. Holloway said she wrote the play after her own life experiences.

“They say that comedy and tragedy often go hand in hand and it’s true with this play and with my life,” Holloway said. “We lost my grandfather recently and in the years and months leading up to his death there were many times that my family was called back together in Mississippi to say goodbye to him but he hung on for years.”

Holloway said when you get with family that is when hilarious things happen and that’s what the play captures. Holloway said the next step is Off-Broadway.

“We did this production there to shop to producers and potential investors that might want to help us take the show to an Off-Broadway stage,” Holloway said.

Holloway said she writes plays as that is her creative outlet. Holloway said it only took her 48 hours to write the entire play.
