Sells Said LA Golf Team Matured

The Livingston Academy boys golf season is over after Monday’s district tournament and head coach Buddy Sells said this time of year comes with a mix of emotions.

Senior Isaac Keller led the pack with a score of 90, Courbin Bournes recorded a 92, Nathan Raines shot a 103 and Blake Melton notched a 108 on the day. Sells said that a fun part of coaching is seeing his golfers independently strive to be better.

“From the beginning of the season to the end, I did notice there’d be days I would go out there without calling practice and they’d be out there playing or getting a lesson from instructors or things like that,” Sells said. “And part of maturing is taking the initiative to address the issues that you’re having.”

With only four golfers competing, the Wildcats were not eligible to move onto regionals as a team, just as individuals. Sells said while many golfers will look to new equipment to address issues, his golfers attacked the problem at the source.

“They have put their time in, they’ve put a lot of work into it,” Sells said. “It may not show up in the scores this year, but going forward keeping them connected will be my biggest battle.”

With his golfers also being baseball players, Sells said it can be challenging to keep them practicing and committed to golf. He said saying farewell to his lone senior Isaac Keller will be tough, but the end of the season will present a time to look back.

“It’s a very satisfying feeling, the end of the season,” Sells said. “Because you get to reflect on a lot of the experiences and things that go on and you don’t realize it’s happening until you get the opportunity to reflect at the end.”
