Spencer Aldermen approved rezoning a property on College Street Thursday, so a storage unit facility could be built in the old downtown area.
The property is being rezoned from a central business district to a general business district. Aldermen David Chandler said he was for the rezoning of the property as the facility it would be a benefit to the county and city.
“It’ll add to tax value to the county because the city doesn’t have a property tax,” Chandler said. “So it’ll help and I mean anyways it’s something else. A storage place area in the city would be good because even businesses would use it to store extra stuff and it would be very convenient.”
The property already features a barber shop. Chandler said the approval of rezoning reflects the city’s willingness to work with small businesses.
“Anything that can help build more businesses in our community,” Chandler said. “The old downtown is where this is at and downtown has seemed to have moved to the main Hwy 111 so anything we can do to help build our old downtown area is good.”
Chandler had concerns about what the storage facility would look like. Jewel’s Cutz Owner Joy “Jewel” Larriniga is also the owner of the proposed storage facility and she said the facility will fit right in.
“I’m going to try to incorporate it into the same as my barbershop,” Larriniga said. “The roof is going to be the same as my barbershop and it’s going to be called Jewel’s so everything will be connected to my workshop to where it will blend in with the town.”
Larrinaga said she already has a contractor ready to start pouring a concrete slab for the facility. Larrinaga said the upcoming weather could put a delay in when the process of building the facility begins.
In other business, Aldermen approved the second and final reading to grant Warren County Utility District the right to franchise and occupy roads and property for premises of constructing, maintaining, repairing, renewing, and operating a water and sewer water distribution and disposal system.
The Aldermen approved two-year term limits for the newly established Economic Development And Tourism Board. Some members will have a three-year term limit to avoid a complete wipeout of board members after the first two-year term is up.
