Van Buren Waste Services Rate Increasing

Van Buren County will pay more for trash after accepting a bid from Capital Waste Services Tuesday.

County Mayor David Sullivan said the new rate will jump up from a neighborhood of $57 a ton to $65 a ton. Commissioner Cale Crain said the county has no other choice but to accept the increased rate.

“This would be kind of setting a contract deal to set in a rate that they don’t up for at least a year,” Crain said. “I feel like that would probably be good cause there is really nowhere else right now as of today that we can take our trash that’s local enough and close enough to us.”

Crain said the rate has gone up a couple of times in recent years since using Capital Waste Services. Sullivan said the increased rate will not take effect until sometime in October.

In other Business, Van Buren County Commissioners held elections for Chairman and Vice Chairman positions. Commissioner Cale Crain was elected as the new Chairman. Commissioner Tabitha Denney was elected as the new Vice-Chairman.

The commissioners also approved keeping the same committee members for Committee A and Committee B.

Van Buren County Sheriff Michael Brock honored Corrections Officer Patricia Simons for her work and dedication to maintaining the jail and making repairs to the jail when needed. Brock also honored Chief Deputy Stewart Caldwell for his assistance in ensuring the safety of a family that had their vehicle broken down in Spencer. Caldwell called a reputable mechanic who came out and fixed the family’s vehicle without towing the vehicle. The family was very thankful for Caldwell’s professionalism and said thanks to him and the mechanic a vacation disaster was avoided.

Commissioners approved the bid-out for selling garage doors from the old convenience center and a truck. Sullivan said someone asked about purchasing the garage doors from the county and the truck that sits on the same property is leaking oil out of the motor and has gas tank issues. A minimum bid price was not set.
