The Clay County football team opens their season in just over a week against York Institute and their focus is getting in the end zone and putting points on the board.
The Bulldogs went 7-5 in 2023 and in their wins they averaged nearly 40 points. Head coach Bruce Lamb said that his main focus on offense is fielding a highly potent offense that can score.
“So, it doesn’t really matter to me whether it’s a run or a pass,” Lamb said. “We just want to be efficient in what we do and hopefully put some points on the board.”
The offense will be led by quarterback and four year starter Nate Adams, who became the first person in school history to throw for over 2,000 yards. Lamb said that Adams is a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball, but offensively is the Bulldogs’ key to success.
“He’s definitely our leader and he’s the one that’s got to put these guys under his wings and take them with him,” Lamb said. “On the field, I expect what I got last year, but even better. He seems more relaxed and more comfortable with what we’re doing offensively.”
The offensive weapons Adams will have at his disposal are his younger brother and cousin Reece and Hayden Adams and Ayden Soto. In just his first year playing running back, Soto ran for over 700 yards and provided Adams with an extra pair of hands to block and catch out of the backfield.
Lamb said that he and the coaching staff were surprised to see Soto thrive in the backfield so early and that they expect an even better year from him in 2024.
“We look for big things out of him this year as a senior,” Lamb said. “He’s gotten faster and stronger and I know he’ll do a good job.”
