Putnam Landfill Fire Controlled

The cause of a fire at the Putnam County Landfill remains a mystery.

Putnam County Firefighter Kevin Asher said he received the call. Compact workers noticed smoke in the landfill. When Asher arrived, he said the fire had spread drastically.

“The crew spent several hours well, all night actually down there with Joseph Roberts who has the contract down there,” Asher said. “They were scraping trash back and spraying as they would scrape trash back and about daylight, they decided the best thing to do was to go ahead and put dirt on top of it and cover the fire back up.”

Asher said the department got the fire under control.

“We are not exactly sure the cause of why it started,” Asher said. “It could have been some stained rags that were down in the pile and maybe a battery ended up in there somehow. Somebody could have thrown a cigarette out while they were dumping trash. We are not sure exactly what started it but it seemed to have started several hours before we got there.”
