Baxter elected a new Mayor Thursday after Write-In Danny Holmes took the Election Day vote to defeat John Martin.
Holmes received 58.86 percent of the vote, to Martin’s 41.14 percent. Holmes said he beat the odds while winning as a write-in.
“You know, we did a write-in vote and a lot of people said oh no you can’t win on a write-in,” Holmes said. “But this is my hometown, I love this town, I love the citizens, I love everything we have here. I’m just excited to be the next mayor of Baxter.”
Holmes said he had a sinking feeling once early voting results showed he was severely behind Martin. Holmes said he is excited to take Baxter in a new direction.
“The new direction in my mind is the citizens,” Holmes said. “The citizens of Baxter. I want them to start coming to the council meetings. I want them to tell us how to make Baxter better.”
Holmes said he is looking to start a Baxter Business Committee to hear opinions from Baxter businesses on how to make Baxter better. Holmes thanked Martin for the eight years he spent as mayor.
