Van Buren Schools Increase Cafeteria Prices

The Van Buren County Board of Education approved increased lunch prices for the upcoming school year Wednesday night.

All school meals will increase $1.50. Van Buren County Director of Schools Jared Copeland said the increase will hopefully help the overall bottom line for Food Services Director Christy Troglen’s budget.

“I know I presented you all with our cafeteria budget,” Copeland said. “We are going to kind of need to work on that a little bit. It was recommended from her consultant and some other counties that we talk to, to raise our prices to at least be in line with what they are in.”

The board also approved a No Charge Policy for Staff. Copeland said they adopted the policy as other surrounding counties already have a similar policy.

“It is not a huge problem with our staff,” Copeland said. “But we wanted to tighten that up a little bit to make it a maximum threshold charge of $50, and they got to pay that until they can add anything else.”

Previous meal prices were $2.00 for breakfast, $3.50 for lunch, and $1.50 for individual items on the menu.

In other business, the board approved tenure for eight teachers. The board approved to request bids for the Spencer Elementary School gym floor project, new school busses, LED lights, and masonry work for Spencer Elementary.
