Flynn’s Lick Volunteer Fire Department now giving out blessing bags to those who have lost their homes to fire.
The bags contain items such as toiletries, clothes, and restaurant gift cards. Organizer Jamie Meadows said that losing a house to a fire is devastating.
“You’re having to start all over from the beginning with everything,” Meadows said. “And so I’m sure the mental load of that, it has to be just mentally exhausting to think of not just for you and what you need, but you know if you have children and a spouse you are thinking of all the things that everybody needs.”
The department uses donations to complete the bags and has 20 bags put together. Meadows said she wants to continue putting bags together and bring the idea to more fire departments.
“Any of the local fire departments that are in the community,” Meadows said. “If someone does have a total loss of their home we would absolutely love to have enough bags to share with everyone.”
Meadows said she got the idea after a conversation with her husband Jordan Meadows who is a volunteer in the department.
“He was telling me just the things he had to do in a certain fire,” Meadows said. “He had said that the family had to leave quickly to get to the dollar store before they closed. When he said that it just, I don’t know it just kind of laid heavy on my heart and I thought we should have simple things like that on the truck because the last thing you want to have to do is run to the dollar store.”
Meadows said it is an honor to give back to the community. For more information, visit the Flynn’s Lick Volunteer Fire Department Facebook Page.
