McMinnville Community Garden Ripening

The McMinnville Community Garden showcasing a variety of vegetables for the public this summer.

The garden is located in Ramsey Park. McMinnville Storm Water Manager Lyndon Bussell helped organize the community growing space, a free rsource for everyone.

“It’s been pretty successful,” Bussell said. “We actually did it last year as well and we got a lot of great feedback. You know, I would go out there and water the garden and you would see people grilling out at the park and they would be picking tomatoes or peppers from the garden and using that.”

Bussell said the city received a grant and has plans to start another community garden and orchard in a new park that will be built this fall. The new park will be located on Potter Lane.

The garden grows other vegetables such as jalapenos and cucumbers. The city of McMinnville is responsible for the upkeep of the garden. Bussell said some community members chip in and help take care of the garden.

“We actually saw people from the community come in and do some maintenance on it,” Bussell said. “I know I’ve gone out there and seen them pulling weeds or re-staking some of the tomatoes out there.”

Bussell said he is not concerned about someone taking advantage of the garden.

“If there is someone there that really needed what is there,” Bussell said. “Then that’s what it is there for, you know, that’s for the people that need it. So we have not seen anything like that we have not gotten comments that people are taking advantage of it.”
