Cookeville Set For Orientation Thursday Afternoon

Cookeville High School hosting freshman orientation Thursday to allow students and families to get familiar with the school.

Principal Karen Trentham said students at the event can get their schedule and student ID, pay their fees, and walk around campus to find their classes. Trentham said there will also be a brief assembly for students and parents about various events at the school and rules for items like pick up and drop off.

“Students who aren’t familiar with our campus, it just, I think it makes them and their parents feel better about coming when they can put their eyes on the places that they’ll be going to and talk to the people who will be their teachers so they’ll know a little more about what they’re doing,” Trentham said.

Trentham said that school clubs will be set up in the building’s common area so freshmen can see what the school has to offer and sign up for any clubs they are interested in. She said the high school’s student congress will have representatives at the event to give tours and answer questions as well.

Trentham said the event will have two sessions, with one at 3:00pm and one at 5:00pm.

“Going from middle school to the high school is definitely an adjustment,” Trentham said. “And of course our school is a lot bigger than middle schools are. Although it may seem big, once you’re here it’s really not. The way the school is laid out, everything is pretty easy to find and there (is) a lot of helpful people here.”

Trentham said she hopes the event will be a positive experience as students tend to have less anxiety about going to the school once they have had the chance to see it.
