The Cookeville Police Department offering active shooter training to the public as the number of cases continues to increase.
Police Chief Randy Evans said citizens can call and organize a time with the department to train for active shooter scenarios. Evans said they offer this after an FBI Investigation found that from 2019 to 2023 active shooter cases went up an estimated 89 percent from the previous five years.
“If you have a business or a group of citizens that want training on how to survive those kind of incidents we proudly and freely offer that,” Evans said.
The department offers training to other emergency first responders as they might encounter an active shooter. Evans said the department offers the training often to keep his department and others prepared for the worst-case scenario.
“We do that training pretty regularly,” Evans said. “We will utilize local schools, local churches, local businesses, and really try to stay on top of our game in that respect.”
Evans said that active shooter situations are a problem that will not be going away any time soon.
“If you look at the number of those shooting type situations that we now call active shooter incidents, I mean obviously it is a problem, and it’s a problem that is not going away anytime soon,” Evans said.
