The Fentress County Senior Center will apply for major grant from the Tennessee Department of Disability and Aging to fund various maintenance projects.
Director Kelly Young said the grant provides up to $100,000 in funding for various purposes that can be chosen by the center. Young said the grant is similar to a $30,000 one they recently received from the same department, but this money could be put towards building improvements and vehicle purchases.
“Our building is in need of flooring to be fixed in, in different areas, as well as the bathrooms need to be updated and have work done to those, some toilets replaced, sinks replaced, things like that,” Young said. “So looking at that, this would save on the county building budget.”
Young said they still need to look into how much these different projects will cost and which ones they need to prioritize. She said they are also considering purchasing another bus if they are awarded the grant.
“We have the funds, the means to take more of our seniors on trips at a time, but our bus will only transport twenty-five,” Young said.
Young said it is a reimbursement grant, meaning they will submit an estimate of the costs for what they need and receive that much in grant funding after it is paid for.
“There’s various different things that we could do with this grant money, we just don’t have it all in stone yet what we want to spend it on,” Young said.
Young said there is also a minor grant from the department for centers that need $5,000 to $10,000 in funding, but she said they were only allowed to apply for one of the two grants.
“I don’t know if you all want to approve applying for either or because we have to look into costs and things like that, get estimates and stuff on what we can and can’t do,” Young said.
