Overton County Executive Stephen Barlow was taken from Monday night’s County Commission meeting in an ambulance after appearing to suffer a heat-related illness.
A packed house attended Monday night’s public hearing on a proposed property tax increase. The upper courtroom was totally full as of 5pm Monday. The air conditioning in the room was not working.
County Commissioner Gregg Nivens said he thought temperatures had exceeded 90 degrees in the courtroom.
The meeting ended, then Barlow was taken ill.
The ambulance left the courthouse around 7:20pm Monday night. Barlow’s condition not known. EMS personnel had been in the courtroom prior to the incident.
The public hearing ended after one hour. During the Commission meeting that followed, Commissioners voted down a salary schedule that would impact the entire budget. That means the budget must go back to the Budget Committee for further work.
