Former Fentress County Rescue Squad Captain Indicted For Stealing

A former Fentress County Rescue Squad Captain has been indicted on charges of stealing some $22,000.

An investigation with the state Comptroller’s Office and Fentress County Sheriff’s Department determined that Mark Crabtree misappropriated the funds between December 2022 and December 2023.

He stole some $12,000 by writing unauthorized checks to himself for personal use, signing both his own and the former treasurer’s names on the checks. He stole another $10,000 by making unauthorized ATM withdrawals and one over-the-counter withdrawal for personal use. He also stole $1,000 by making unauthorized purchases with the rescue squad debit card.

On January 27, 2024, Crabtree was removed from his position as captain.

Based upon this investigation, Crabtree was indicted by the Fentress County Grand Jury on one count of theft over $10,000, one count of forgery over $10,000, and one count of fraudulent use of a credit or debit card over $1,000.
