Waste Management Begins Takeover Process

Waste Management has begun the hiring process as the takeover of the White County Landfill now underway.

Area Director of Disposal Operations Don Gentilcore said he is excited to bring innovative opportunities to the county. He said new employees will begin onboarding when the sale closes in early July.

“We have several other landfills that we own and operate within Middle Tennessee,” Gentilcore said. “But what this provides us is an opportunity to look at how we can provide that service for the counties that surround White County. You think about Dekalb or Putnam or Warren even into, like, a Rutherford County. You know, it allows us to provide those services for those communities.”

Gentilcore said the company will unveil its 30, 60, and 90-day plan to the community once the deal closes. He said that for the next month, regrading, material setup, and entryway improvements will be the focus.

“You’ll see some people and equipment coming into the facility,” Gentilcore said. “We have some work to do on the site to get it ready. You’ll also see us reaching out to the community and our neighbors to introduce ourselves and talk about our business and our long-term plans.”

White County Commissioners approved the sale Monday night. Gentilcore said in a highly-regulated business like solid waste, working closely with TDEC will be important as well. He said the he was excited by the Commission’s vote Monday, a huge step in a process of several years now.

“It’s, you know, an involved process, obviously, that requires a lot of due diligence on our part and the county’s to make sure that we’re going to be a good match for each other,” Gentilcore said. “I think this is a long-term relationship that we’re entering into, so it’s really important for us that we both understand what the terms of that relationship are. The county has been great to work with.”

He said as Middle Tennessee grows, the need for feasible, long-term solid waste disposal systems grows. He said he is excited to see the company get involved in its new community and he looks forward to the next steps.
