The Livingston Police Department is offering a $500 reward to anyone with information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of an individual who has been dumping goat carcasses on private property.
Police Chief Ray Smith said the department received a call from a man who found the animals while examining his property between Elm Grove Road and Hickory Street. He said no autopsy has been performed on the three carcasses, so he cannot say whether or not the goats died of natural causes.
“It’s not that big of a piece of property, but it is an area that can be seen most of the time when you drive by,” Smith said. “This ain’t some behavior that needs to take place quite often or I’ve seen take place quite often.”
Smith said the department has been to the land to inspect the carcasses and questioned nearby residents who own livestock to see if they have any goats missing. He said anyone with information can call the Livingston Police Department.
“Illegal dumping,” Smith said. “I guess we can start there. And dumping animal carcasses and stuff like that would be up to the court system. It could come with a steady fine and even jail time if need be.”
He said someone has likely been caught up in an inability to find an appropriate place to dump their fallen livestock and has made a poor choice in choosing a final resting place for the animals. He said the department received the call early this week and will continue to investigate.
