White County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said it may be time for the county and the city of Sparta to work together more closely to expand parks and recreation facilities in the community.
The county is adding a new frisbee golf facility at the White County Recreational Complex. The city is working toward a splashpad. That development has caused concern about the supply of ball fields in the city. Robinson said that might be the kind of opportunity where the two entities could collaborate.
“You’ve got two different governments, and we are organized different,” Robinson said. “And so it’s hard to, even with the best intentions, it’s hard to co-mingle something like when your frame, your structure of how you operate, is different.”
Robinson said creating a larger shared facility could save money and also make things easier on residents, especially parents who have children playing in different leagues.
“Right now we’ve got two distinct parks; one in the county and one in the city,” Robinson said. “And so putting everything in one location I think would be easier, especially on the parents.”
Robinson said they have plenty of land at the highway 70 site for additional fields and other recreational facilities.
With the frisbee golf course under construction, Robinson said he hopes it is ready to use by next summer.
