Bicentennial Day Event Celebrates 200 Years of Fentress County

A Bicentennial Day Event Saturday will celebrate Fentress County’s 200th birthday.

The event will feature bluegrass bands, a variety of vendors, games, and more. Historical Society Member David Steffey said the event is a celebration of the county’s history.

“1823, a lot of things have changed since then over the years,” Steffey said. “This is 200 years this county has been here. It was formed out of three other counties. It was named after James Fentress who put in to get the county made.”

Fentress passed the law in 1823. He served two terms as speaker of the house, the latter coming from 1819 to 1825. Steffey said it is important for people to come out to the event to support the community.

“Its a way to get to know your neighbors and get the community together,” Steffy said. “Its time to realize that this was a community started 200 years ago, and its time to celebrate.”

Steffy said planning a celebration event was a lot more work than he thought it would be, but the Historical Society is getting a lot of help.

“Its just been all hands on, not only for the Historical Society, but a lot of community people have come in and volunteered to help,” Steffey said. “Newspaper has been helping, a couple of woman from the newspaper have been here at meetings, helping us out. It’s a wide variety of people. It’s not just the Historical Society that’s putting this on.”

Among some of Saturday’s entertainment will be soap making, a blacksmith, and a vintage fashion show. The vintage fashion show will feature clothing from the early 1800s to the 1920s. It will take place at 10 a.m. at the community center. The rest of the bicentennial celebration will take place behind the courthouse starting at noon.
