The Millard Oakley Public Library will be the first library in the state to offer special glasses for those who are colorblind.
The program will allow the library to give special glasses that correct red-green colorblindness to three people in the community. Library Director Judith Cutright said she is proud the library is getting this opportunity.
“Tennessee is a very colorful state,” Cutright said. “I hate to think of anyone missing out on some of the vibrant colors, especially with fall coming up.”
The library needs three volunteers from Overton County who are red-green color blind. The only thing the Library asks is you allow them to film when the glasses are worn for the first time. If you are interested in being selected call (931) 823-1888.
In addition to the glasses that will be given away, the library will also receive a fourth pair of glasses that can be loaned out. This fourth pair of glasses will only stay with Livingston’s facility for a month before going to another library in the state. Cutright said the for-loan glasses are not just be for those with color blindness.
“Apparently these glasses also enhance the vision of normal people somewhat,” Cutright said. “So even if you don’t have color blindness, colors may be more vivid if you have these on.”
East Tennessee State University applied for the NIH grant and used the money to purchase the special glasses. Millard Oakley Library applied to be a part of the glasses program and was selected to be the first to roll the program out.
The program will begin on September 21 at 10 a.m.
“Everyone is invited to come out to the Library and see what the fuss is about with these glasses.” Cutright said.
