Van Buren County officials want to install a new above ground fuel tank to help take care of county vehicles.
Committee B Chair Dusty Madewell said increasing fuel costs had been brought up previously. He said and the commissioners feel like they need to move forward with looking into a county fuel tank to save money.
“We’re trying to be good stewards of what we’ve been given,” Madewell said. “And any way we can save money and benefit the county and the budget and everything else, I think it would be a good idea to pursue.”
Madewell said he had been told the fuel would be used by county vehicles and possibly the Sheriff and Fire Department. He said he needed more information on which departments may use the fuel and what possible costs and savings are projected.
Mayor David Sullivan said the county could expect to save at least twenty five cents per gallon on diesel fuel with a county owned tank.
“The school has their own double tank already,” Sullivan said. “A lot of counties have these.”
Sullivan said he was getting numbers on the cost to put a tank and/or tanks in. He said the plan was to put the tank inside the fenced area next to the Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff Michael Brock said his involvement was simply to coordinate on placement of the tanks to provide security.
Sullivan said further information would be reviewed by Committee B Tuesday night at 6 p.m. If Committee B approves, the proposal for a county fuel tank will move to full commission.
