City of Cookeville reminding residents of the requirements to shoot off fireworks in light of the upcoming 4th of July celebrations.
Chief Building Official David Clouse said exploding fireworks is only permitted from July 1st to July 5th before 10 p.m. nightly, until midnight on the 4th.
“A lot of that is just general courtesy of your neighbors and of course, we want to make sure we’re safe and responsible with the fireworks and follow manufacturers’ instructions,” Clouse said. “Of course we want everyone to have fun, but we want to be respectful of everyone else too.”
According to Cookeville Code Title 7 Chapter 5, it is unlawful to set off fireworks within 600 feet of any church, hospital, funeral home, or school. It is also a violation to set off fireworks from a car, at a car, or at any person or group of people.
“But say a church wants to do a small fireworks show, then they would have permission to do it,” Clouse said. “But other than that you’re not supposed to explode fireworks at any of those other locations.”
The code also dictates any violation of the city’s codes is declared a misdemeanor. That person could face a fine if convicted.
The hours are the same for the New Year’s Eve holiday, from December 28th to January 2nd. On New Year’s Eve, Clouse said you shouldn’t shoot fireworks later than 1 a.m.
