Putnam Schools Gym Floor Projects To Be Completed Over Summer

Putnam County Schools gym floor upgrade project bids came in slightly more expensive than desired.

Deputy Director Tim Martin said the system is working on Cornerstone Elementary and Algood Middle School’s floors as part of the annual rotation. He said the school board approved a bid for some $70,590.00.

“It’s not unexpected, it’s a little bit higher than the last couple of gym floors we’ve done,” Martin said. “But as we’ve seen with the cost of everything going up lately, I can’t say it was unexpected at all.”

While the two schools are next in line for the resurfacing, Martin said the main focus will be the overhaul of the Avery Trace Middle School gym floor. The gym suffered water damage earlier this year and needs an entirely new floor.

Martin said because of that, they originally thought Cornerstone Elementary and Algood Middle would have to have their work done in the fall. He said they were able to find a contractor that can get the work done over the summer.

“We try to get a refinished gym floor every 10 years at one of our schools,” Martin said. “And that’s just the process of completely sanding down the floor, putting all new markings on the floor, new logo in the center, new foul lines, new three-point lines, new volleyball lines in all the places that are necessary. And then of course putting the new clear coat finish over the top.”

Martin said all three gym floor projects are hopefully going to be completed over the summer before the start of school.
