Pickett Approves Next Five-Year Appraisal Plan

Pickett County has approved its next appraisal plan after completing its most recent appraisal.

County Executive Stephen Bilbrey said the state reassesses properties in Pickett County every five years. He said the county commission approved the state’s plan through 2028.

“And then the state will come in and they do a little bit each year,” Bilbrey said. “And then on that fifth year, they kind of put everything together and make sure everything they’ve done in the last four years is current and if not they’ll make changes.”

Bilbrey said every county in the state of Tennessee undergoes this process. He said some are on a four-year cycle or even a six-year cycle.

Bilbrey said now that the county commission approved the plan the next steps will simply be to follow it through. He said then in 2028 the county will take a look at how property values have adjusted and what they need to do to potentially set a new tax rate.

“What happens with state policy, let’s say that Pickett County takes in around $6 million in property tax dollars, after reappraisal year we can only bring in $6 million,” Bilbrey said. “So hopefully the tax rate will decrease. Even though folks’ assessed values have increased, their tax should go down to kind of offset that.”
