A Cumberland County teen is now an indoor International Bowhunting Organization world champion.
14-year-old Trevor Thompson competed for the first time ever in this category in Louisville this past weekend. He said he first got into bowhunting when he was four years and eventually joined the Crab Orchard Elementary team in second grade.
“I never really thought about bowhunting but once I really started shooting bows, I got my first one two years ago, my first hunting bow that I started bowhunting with,” Thompson said. “And then it’s also fun to meet new people in the sport.”
Thompson said he cannot describe how it feels to be named a world champion. He said he went into the facility just two hours before competing to watch and get an idea of how the scoring and the competition worked.
Thompson said he plans to continue on with his bowhunting efforts. He said he will next set his sights on the outdoor competition. His advice to those early on in their bowhunting practice: keep at it.
“If you’re still in school, see if your school has a team and see if they have a bow there that you can try out and see if you really want to do it and then practice,” Thompson said. “Don’t let missing the target bring you down. You’re not going to be perfect in anything to start with. Practice at home as much as you can, and just keep shooting as much as you can.”
