News Talk 94.1/AM 1600 Where The Upper Cumberland Talks
The State handed out more than $12.5 million Wednesday to Upper Cumberland cities and counties to help with water and sewer infrastructure.
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation made the awards of American Rescue Plan funds. A total of 102 grants handed out Wednesday including just over $1 million to Sparta.
City Administrator Tonya Tindle said the money will be extremely helpful in clearing up some issues.
“Yes, very much,” Tindle said. “We have attributed this grant to rehab our sewer system. We are currently under a moratorium with Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and this is going to go a long way in improving our sewer system.”
Tindle said the engineers had already addressed some work that needed immediate attention such as manholes, dilapidated pipes, and pump stations that needed to be replaced.
Tindle said they had issues in the past with overflows due to high waters from rain. She said the new funding will help continue the city’s work remediating those issues.
“We had an inch and a half of rain the other day,” Tindle said. ” And we had no recorded overflows at all.”
Tindle said the engineers are still in the design phase for parts of the sewer system project.
In other news, Crossville will use some $3.54 million on its water distribution system and wastewater collection. Also receiving money Wednesday…Allardt, Carthage, and Red Boiling Springs.
